Bunions are swelling and inflammation around a toe joint caused by excessive pressure on that joint. And there is something that causes this pressure. Pointy toed shoes are the most common cause. Shoes are like a dark, tight, coffin shaped dungeons for your so important toes. Your big toe is constantly forced, under tremendous pressures, inward, toward the mid line of your foot. We would never do this to our manicured hands would we? (T-word? Thumb-onions?)
The big toe bones don’t bend so the joint is pressured to its limit of tolerability. The pain, disfigurement, dysfunction, swelling and inflammation are just what any good joint does and is supposed to do. No rocket science here. Whats the take away? Big take away!
- Bunions are avoidable in most all cases.
- Bunions most often don’t need surgery.
In most all cases – surgery is “chosen” without any non invasive alternatives presented. Surgery is sold (opps ”recommended”) as a quick fix to a slowly progressive treatable condition vs. a path to regaining healthy feet. Foot health and conditioning on par with how important our feet are.
The best cure is always one the body achieves without dangerous, invasive, even life threatening procedures or symptom masking drugs, but everybody knows this.
Important B-word FACTS:
- Bunions respond to supportive therapy, exercise and TLC.
- Bunions don’t suddenly appear, they’ve been coming your way a long time ( since somewhere in fashion conscious school)
- Bunions are not an expected result for the perfect feet you were born with.
- Bunions are caused by something. They are rarely seen in bare foot cultures -( non shoe wearing societies)
- Bunions are nearly always caused by excessive pressure
- Removal of the pressure is effective
- In severe cases surgical bunion intervention my be required.
We placed man on the moon over 40 years ago. We not only have iPhones and the internet, but wireless internet anywhere you want it! Yet we are still more familiar with the shape of a shoe, than the ideal, unaltered appearance of a healthy, natural foot.
We take our feet for granted. If we ignored our hands like we have ignored our feet, the ring and bracelet, plus countless millions of hand strengthening squeeze balls and gadgets would surely cease to exist.
However, recently two very exciting new products are gaining a toe hold and are rapidly changing the shape of foot heath. These two companies combined have over 100 years of history in foot awareness and providing world class products.
One company is Vibram headquartered in Italy. They recently came out with their highy successful Five Fingers foot wear.
Five fingers is a revolutionary shoe that has individual toe chambers. This results in amazing benefits not only to the foot but to the entire body. This is because the entire body’s posture and movement dynamic is supported and managed from the feet up. Each individual toe is designed to do its very specific and Important job (remember the stories of people that have lost their toes to frost bite and can hardly walk because their balance is critically dependent on toes.)
The second company is us, YogaPro of Ann Arbor, Michigan USA. YogaToes toe stretchers are another revolutionary product that conditions, corrects and relaxes your feet after shoes. Regular use of YogaToes provides the type of exercise and therapy that you would gain if you were barefoot for a portion of your walking day. You can put a YogaToes toe stretcher on one foot and leave if for a minute or two take it off and see an immediate comparative difference between both of your feet. You will also feel and experience an exponential shift in how your feet feel… and actually how you feel. YogaToes toe stretchers help correct and prevent the conditions that cause bunions. YogaToes are an integral part of any potential bunion recovery program.
Please check out these products and what people that use them are saying. Hopefully the B word is a little better understood and less painful now.

I love my YogaToes…like Zen for the feet
Yogatoes have made a difference in putting off surgery for me…could you make a post on the exercise you mention in your bullets above? Maybe if I add some more therapy I can avoid surgery!?!
Very informative article! I believe that YogaToes can help with bunions; I have a bunionette on one foot, and they have provided much relief, especially after long days of being on my feet in heels or after a dance class.
This is some valuable information and glad to know surgery is not the only option.
My feet look deformed because of my bunions and I am ashamed to wear sandals
in public
Five finger footwear looks awesome! I want some! I want yoga toes too!

Yoga toes how interesting!
Glad to know I don’t need surgery to correct my bunion. I have worried about it.
I suffer from bunions and thought my cure was to have surgery. I’m going to rethink this decision for awhile
A friend of mine encouraged me to try her Yogatoes while visiting. I was so suprised at the results in such a small time. Not only did my fatigued feet feel like new feet, but my shins were also relieved. I am telling E V E R Y O N E. I also bought a pair for my boyfriend who spend his days in work boots. Simply Amazing. He is in love with them. Thank you. Brillant idea.
